Natural Play Areas

We create unique natural play areas that are tailored to the specific needs of our clients and their environments. We combine a deep understanding of the benefits of natural play and the need we all have for green spaces.

Playful Design

We design and build bespoke natural play areas that offer so much more than conventional or manufactured play spaces. The timber we use is not treated with chemicals, so it can sustain life which children can interact with and explore. Using the Play Equipment Standard as a guide, we create safe but fun play spaces that stretch children's abilities and deepen their connection to the nature and history in their surroundings.

Sustainable Approach

Our designs are created using sustainably sourced materials and many of the structures are completely biodegradable. The natural materials and native plants we use create spaces that are in harmony with the natural environment.

A Sense of Place

We believe that special places nurture a sense of curiosity. Whether through a sculpture, a wildflower meadow or a play structure, everyone should feel connected to the land, its stories and the magic of its landscape and history.

Research

We delve deeply into what makes places special and weave those stories and influences into our designs. They reflect our amazing journey in time and help us to protect and care about places for future generations.

Authenticity

To complete the picture and bring places to life, we can provide an authentic experience by recreating historical objects or environments.  This allows people to connect with the history of places in a more meaningful way.

Making space for nature

Our wildlife is in trouble and we need to do all we can to restore natural habitats in a rapidly changing climate. The future is uncertain but the possibilities are exciting and endless, we can all do our bit to create space for nature.

Expert knowledge

With our background in countryside management, our team knows all about conserving and restoring nature. We also help landowners, councils, farmers and developers to deliver a range of environmental stewardship and biodiversity net gain projects.

On any scale

We can help you to deliver any size project anywhere. It could be a tiny garden planter, a small meadow, a school field or landscape scale habitat restoration. It all adds up to a healthier natural environment for us all.

A naturally sustainable approach

At Wildwood UK, we offer services that not only provide fun and engaging play areas, but also have a positive impact on the environment and the community.

Truly Sustainable Materials

Almost every part of our structures is biodegradable. Over their lifetimes, the huge amount of carbon captured by the trees we use almost always outweighs our carbon emission impact during transportation and construction.Once installed, the timber structures return nutrients to the soil and contribute further to carbon capture. Our play areas are always made from sustainably sourced oak and other hardwoods from the UK. We select timber carefully whilst maintaining records of any plant passports and notifiable pests and diseases.

Naturally Carbon Neutral

Everything we plant benefits the soil, wildlife and it sequesters carbon. Native species of plants not only create natural beauty, they benefit a whole range of organisms, not just the ones we’re familiar with.

It's important to us to select only native species of good provenance for our designs as these are the most suited to our native wildlife. We ensure that what we’re planting is going in the right place for maximum benefit and to enable effective maintenance in the future.

Yes we do, there’s no one else better placed to repair play structures and manage the habitats we create for you.

The natural untreated timber we use in our play structures can last as long as treated timber (about 10-15 years). The larger pieces of oak we use can last even longer, up to 50 years or more! All wood decays eventually and we think it’s better to avoid putting chemically treated wood into our environment... especially where children play.

“The Wildwood concept, as installed at Aldbury C of E Primary School, offers children a wonderful experience. They are free to engage in play and the natural environment, without being bound by the constraints of off-the-shelf playground equipment. The designer considers the principles of the playground equipment standard, so as to eliminate unnecessary risks, yet encompasses the concept of a living, changing play space.”
